Clijsters to the Finals
Kim Clijsters advanced to the Finals after a controversial ending. Down two match points and serving, Serena Williams was called for a foot fault. Serena erupted and verbally went after the lines judge. It was reported to the Umpire and ultimately resulted in a point forfeit which happened to be on match point. It was the second warning against Williams, the first a racket violation. It capped off a frustrating match for Williams who was simply outplayed by Clijsters. Williams made a point to shake Clijsters hand after the match but walked off the court to a chorus of boos by the New York crowd.

Rained Out
It is Semifinal Friday for the Women in Arthur Ashe Stadium. In what could be a classic matchup, Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams will face each other. Last time both played in the tournament, they won the Title. Williams last year and Clijsters before her retirement.
In the second Semifinal, Caroline Wozniacki will go against Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium. It is the first Semifinal for the 19 year old Wozniacki who has played very steady throughout the tournament.
In other action, Rafael Nadal and Fernando Gonzalez will conclude their quarterfinal match with Nadal up one set and currently in a second set tiebreaker.

Del Potro joins the party
Juan Martin Del Potro made it into his first US Open Semifinal on Thursday after defeating Marin Cilic in four sets. Del Potro dropped the first set but turned it on after that to take the next three with ease. The run for Del Potro is not surprising given his rise in the rankings the last year. He will play the winner of the Rafael Nadal-Fernando Gonzalez match which was suspended until Friday.
For the first time in the tournament, rain played a factor as it forced the Nadal-Gonzalez match to be concluded on Friday. Nadal leads the match 7-6(4), 6-6 (3-2). The conditions turned windy and then rainy and play was suspended. The match is the last of the quarterfinals.

Clock strikes midnight for Oudin
Melanie Oudin's amazing run came to an end on Wednesday night as Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark took down America's new darling, 6-2, 6-2. Oudin never looked as comfortable and could not get into a rhythm during the match. It was a case of too many mistakes by the young American and excellent consistent play by Wozniacki. It will be the first Semifinal in a Grand Slam for the Dane. She will go into that match as a favorite as the ninth seed against unseeded Yanina Wickmayer. A teary Oudin thanked the New York crowd in an interview after the match and she has certainly been the story of the tournament. The sky is the limit for the kid from Georgia.

Federer again!
Roger Federer looked to be cruising to a straight set victory when Robin Soderling reached back, fought and won a third set tiebreak to stay alive. The two ended up in a 4th set tiebreak which could have gone either way but for the 22nd straight time, Federer is into the Semifinals of a Major. Going for his 6th straight US Open Championship, Federer is truly on a special run and it is hard to argue that he is not the greatest tennis player of all time. He will face Novak Djokovic in the Semifinals on Saturday in what could be a classic match. Federer was business like and once again came up with all the shots when Soderling pressured him in the tiebreaker.

Wickmayer in the Final Four
Unseeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium reached her first Grand Slam Semifinal with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Kateryna Bondarenko on Wednesday. She will await the winner of the two teens who square off tonight in Melanie Oudin and Carolina Wozniacki. Wickmayer is only 19 herself so there is guaranteed to be a teen in the Finals on Saturday. In a crazy bracket in which the top seeds fell freely, Wickmayer consistantly went through her draw only having to play one seeded player in the tournament. That was in the first round against Virginie Razzano of France.

Djokovic into the Semis
4th seeded Novak Djokovic advanced to the semifinals with a 4 set victory over Fernando Verdsaco, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2. Djokovic will take on the winner of the Roger Federer-Robin Soderling match later tonight. It looked like Verdsaco had taken control of the match winning the second 6-1, but Djokovic got on a roll and took the last two sets to advance. It is the third straight year that the Serb has made it to the US Open Semifinals.

Clijsters first to Semis
Kim Clijsters had little problem advancing to the Semifinals on Tuesday. She took down Na Li 6-2, 6-4. What a return to tennis from the former Champion who took 2 1/2 years away from the game. She has picked up right where she left off. A huge matchup with Serena Williams is looming in the Semis. If Williams gets past Pennetta, it will pit two defending Champions. Williams was Champion last year and Clijsters won before she stepped away from the game. If this comes about, it should be a great matchup.

Murray throttled
Second seeded Andy Murray could never find his way on Tuesday and fell in a lopsided effort 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 to Marin Cilic. The 16th seed played extremely well while Murray looked lethargic. It begs the question as to whether he was injured. There was talk about a sore wrist but nothing confirmed. Murray looked to be one of the favorites to break through and capture his first major as he had been playing very well. Cilic will go on to face Juand Martin Del Potro, the sixth seed from Argentina who disposed of Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Serena cruises to Semis
Serena Williams took care of Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-3 to set up would has the potential to be a great tennis match. She moves on to the semifinals and a date with Kim Clijsters. Williams, attempting to defend her Championship will be the overwhelming favorite if she gets by to the finals. But Clijsters will be no easy out. Despite her layoff, she has picked up where she left off. The matchup will pit two power players against each other. Serena served well and won in a business like effort on Tuesday night.

Rafa Advances
In a high energy match, Rafael Nadal came back from one set down and rattled off three straight sets to defeat 13 seeded Gaels Monfils 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. The Frenchman came out firing off winners, talking to himself and firing up the New York crowd enroute to a first set tiebreak win. But the antics seemed to fuel Nadal who quickly turned the match around and appeared to wear down Monfils. It was a match filled with long rallies and two players who seemed to run down every ball and keep them in play. The win advances Nadal to the Mens quarterfinals where he will next face Fernando Gonzalez of Chile who defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets on Tuesday.
