The Sweet 16 started this weekend and no I am not speaking of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. It is the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament, another sport that gets the concept of a tournament to decide it's Champion.
If you haven't paid attention, the Lacrosse Tournament is as exciting as they come, with great match ups right out of the gate. Just take a look at Saturday's action for proof. The Colgate-UMass and Denver-North Carolina games were tremendous. We will be following the tournament until a Champion is crowned. The games started on Saturday and go through Memorial Day Weekend.
Stop by for updates, scores and insight from our guest, Dan Johnson. A former Collegiate Player, Johnson offers angles from a players viewpoint and Lacrosse enthuisiast.
Sunday, May 13, 2012
Princeton 5 5)Virginia 6 Final (Charlottesville, Virginia)
Chris Bocklet and Colin Briggs with 2 goals each for Virginia. 3 shot attempts by Princeton in the final 40 seconds in an attempt to equalize. One goes wide, two blocked. Cavs hold on for win.
Stony Brook 9 2)Johns Hopkins 19 Final (Baltimore, Maryland)
Brandon Benn with 5 goals for Hopkins in route to lopsided victory.
Yale 7 4)Notre Dame 13 Final (South Bend, Indiana)

Syracuse 9 3)Duke 12 Final (Durham, N.C.)
Justin Turri - 3 Goals, 2 Assists
"Tough day for Syracuse as Duke rolls! This game wasn't as close as the final 12-9 score, aside from a second half that showed some Syracuse flash, the Blue Devils dominated the Orange. The bottom line; you can't score without possession, and you can't get possession without winning face offs and scooping ground balls. Syracuse turn overs were also key in Duke's first round win."
Colgate 13 6)Massachusetts 11 Final(Amherst, Massachusetts)
Colgate upsets #6 UMass behind a balanced attack. Matt Baker, Peter Baum, Brendan McCann, Ryan Walsh and Chris Zielinski all with 2 goals each.
"UMass shocked by Colgate! The Raiders finish on an 8-2 run outpacing UMass in the high scoring thriller. Offense was certainly the flavor of the day as the Raiders were able to overcome deficits as great as five goals. The strength of schedule was in question for UMass and Colgate was able to deliver the upset by determination and confidence in their game plan."
Canisius 5 1)Loyola, Md 17 Final(Baltimore, Maryland)
Mike Sawyer with 5 goals for the Greyhounds. Eric Lusby chipped in with 3 goals, 2 assists.
"No surprises as Loyola runs Canisius out of the tournament. A 13-2 second half run showcased the overall #1 seed's offense. Mike Sawyer, a Tewaaraton finalist, puts five in the cooker all in that second half run."
Denver 16 8)North Carolina 14 Final (Chapel Hill, N.C.)
Marcus Holman, 6 goals in the game for Carolina. Mark Matthews with 5 for Denver. Jeremy Noble with 3 goals, 7 assists for Pioneers.
"An offensive show for sure! 30 total goals and Denver upsets North Carolina with a dominating performance in face-offs winning 23 in the X. Possessions were at a premium, however UNC was able to stay in the game right up until the end with some outstanding goal tending by Restivo for the Tar Heels. Too bad both of these offenses won't advance. If you like goals, you loved this game!"

The Kentucky Wildcats cut down the nets in New Orleans on Monday, defeating Kansas, 67-59. Anthony Davis took home Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. Congratulations to the Wildcats who won their 8th National Championship as a program.

We started our post season coverage the last week of February as Championship Week started and now we have a Champion, putting a cap to the 2012 College Basketball Season.
Now, for many schools, April 10 becomes the most important day until next season. That is the day that under classmen have to declare for the NBA Draft. It is a much quicker process than in previous years.
For basketball junkies, we can already look ahead to next year and start getting ideas of who will be the teams to beat. Albeit, a very early look. But teams like Indiana and Louisville will be in the discussion if their under classmen stay in school. And of course, your traditional powers such as North Carolina, Kentucky, Duke, Syracuse and Kansas generally reload fairly quick.
Teams like San Diego State, N.C. State and Creighton will be in the conversation for sleeper teams.
As for the Atlantic Coast Conference. I would look for more parody than in the past as North Carolina State will take a step closer to North Carolina and Duke next season with the departure of some key Tar Heels and Blue Devils players.
It is never too early to look ahead, after all for Tar Heel fans, "Late Night with Roy" is less than 7 months away in Chapel Hill.
Thank you for following us during this journey through March and into April. It has been our pleasure to bring you scores, insights and news during the tournament.
Check out our Wrap Up show which puts a big ribbon on the 2011-12 season:

It all started with Championship Week, the last week of February. Then the NCAA Tournament, starting with 68 teams. Now we are down to 2. At the end of the night, one of these basketball powers will be crowned Champion.
Much like Championship Week, I have been collaborating with Andy Coppens, Editor and Writer for madtownbadgers.com to help bring quality coverage of the NCAA Tournament. Andy has been kind enough to share a space at his Blog Talk Radio Show for me to kick around the tournament with him every Monday until completion. Tonight, following the game, we will put a cap to it and tie a big bow on the 2012 NCAA Basketball Season.

And so it comes down to two very interesting match ups at the Final Four on Saturday. In one game you have a rematch of any earlier non-conference game against two teams who are very similar. In the other, we have a rematch of the Civil War in Kentucky as two teams who really do not care for each other engage in battle. Should be a very interesting pair of games determining who will meet for the National Championship on Monday.
