CHRISTMAS TOWN USA

Saturday, December 8th 2007
I am very fortunate that I call Charlotte home for a number of reasons. During the Holidays, one of those reasons is that McAdenville is only about 45 minutes away. McAdenville is the site of Christmastown USA, where the whole town lights up for Christmas.

McAdenville is a small town which takes pride in the fact that as a community, most all of the homes contribute by decorating for Christmas. And not just a few trees are decorated, we are talking about at least 375 trees with as many as 5000 lights per tree. Not to mention all the Christmas displays on houses and doors. The pinnacle of the ride through McAdenville is the lake which is lined with lit trees that reflect in the water with a lit Old Man Winter blowing snowflakes in the air. The fountain in the center of the lake changes colors and fires water around 75 feet in the air. You have the feel of a Norman Rockwell painting as you drive or walk through the town. The towns fire department is lit, Churches ring out Christmas bells and I would like to have a dollar for everyone who wishes you a Merry Christmas as you go through. If you want to feel the spirit of Christmas, one just needs to visit this town which not only has the feel of an older small town, but even the new homes that have recently been developed are contributing as well.

The evolution of McAdenville's Christmas lights started very modestly. In 1956, the small textile town decided to decorate 9 trees with traditional Christmas colors of red, green and white. A manger scene was later placed as a centerpiece of the decorations. The popularity of the lights grew and grew and year after year, more were lit growing to where it is today. Visitors come from all over to witness the lights and it is certainly worth the trip to see them. It has become one of my families Holiday traditions and I would certainly recommend anyone who is in the Charlotte area to make a side trip there. You will not regret it. The people of the town are so friendly and it is worth it to see the smiles on all the childrens faces when they see Santa Claus, the nativity scene or maybe Frosty the Snowman. It is also very nice to see the one tree that is lit in Red, White and Blue and is dedicated to the soldiers.

Preparation starts as early as August, checking the strings of lights and stringing them on the trees. The work of the crew who prepares the town several months before Christmas is certainly worth it and shows the pride that the town has for their town and the lights which attract so many during the Holidays. The lights are on until December 26th. If you can find a time in your busy Christmas season, you will not regret visiting McAdenville, Christmas Town USA.
